How to raise awareness about the National Assistance Card among your local community group

December 12, 2025

The National Assistance Card empowers people with disability to communicate support needs, fostering inclusion in workplaces, communities, and everyday life.

With the launch of the My Card, My Voice campaign, there has never been a better time to help the people in your everyday life understand the National Assistance Card. It’s a simple tool that can make a huge difference for autistic people and people with brain injury.

How to Raise Awareness in Your Local Community

Local organisations and businesses such as libraries, community centres, multicultural hubs, medical centres and grocery stores play a crucial role in promoting inclusivity.

The follow are some practical ways to introduce the National Assistance Card to your community:

1. Send an email or present a letter

The My Card, My Voice campaign provides ready-to-use email templates. You can use these to reach out to your community and encourage them to become National Assistance Card-aware.

Remember to fill in your personal details before sending.

Available templates include:

You can also download our Community Assistance Guide to share with your local doctor, café, library, or any other place you visit often.

2. Display printable materials

A poster on a shop wall promoting the National Assistance Card. The poster reads “We are National Assistance Card Aware.” It explains that customers can show their Card to staff to receive support. A QR code is displayed in the centre, with a link at the bottom to www.NationalAssistanceCard.com.au. The poster is framed by sunlight and surrounded by shelves of small gift items.

Encourage your local organisation to:

  • Display a poster near the counter, entrance, or waiting area
  • Provide takeaway materials, such as brochures for visitors to read or share.

You can contact us via comms@nationalassistancecard.com.au to require copies of brochures and posters.

3. Connect with other groups

Collaboration is key to spreading awareness.

Schools, disability organisations, and other community groups can work together to host awareness events or share resources across networks.

By involving community leaders or representatives, these efforts can reach a wider audience and ensure that the importance of the National Assistance Card is understood and embraced throughout the community.

You can contact us for a free information session about the National Assistance Card - we're happy to provide a short online presentation at your meetings or events and answer any questions you might have.

4. Promote the card online

Promoting the National Assistance Card online is another powerful way to reach people. Sharing information through social media channels or newsletters helps keep communities informed and connected.

You can highlight real stories and testimonials from cardholders to bring the message to life.

How to Introduce the National Assistance Card at Your Work

The National Assistance Card also provides support in professional settings, helping employees advocate for their needs effectively and confidently.

Here’s how to introduce the Card to your employer:

1. Pick the right time and setting

Choose a quiet, private moment – during a check-in, performance review, or casual conversation. Ensure the environment allows for respectful dialogue.

2. Use the Card to support your voice

The Card can communicate your needs without requiring you to explain everything verbally. Include only what you feel comfortable sharing.
